India has achieved a historic industrial milestone as pilot commercial wafer production commenced at the Dholera Special Investment Region in Gujarat, marking the formal arrival of commercial silicon fabrication on the subcontinent.
The facility, constructed under the India Semiconductor Mission in partnership with international foundry leaders, focuses on mature 28nm and 40nm nodes. These nodes are critical components for the global automotive, telecommunications, and industrial automation sectors.
The project represents the culmination of a decade-long national effort to insulate the domestic electronics ecosystem against global supply chain disruptions while capturing a larger share of high-value manufacturing.
