Nordic defense ministers have approved a joint capital acquisition program to equip the region's primary commercial and naval harbors with automated harbor defense shields.
Commercial shipping ports have increasingly been recognized as vulnerable soft targets capable of paralyzing national economies if attacked by small uncrewed aerial systems or subsea saboteurs. The new defensive perimeter integrates radar, optical, and acoustic sensors with autonomous interceptor drones capable of neutralizing airborne threats without deploying explosive ordnance.
Beneath the surface, ports will be protected by automated sonar tripwires and pneumatic bubble curtains designed to disrupt acoustic navigation systems of unauthorized submersibles.
"Civilian ports are the lifelines of our economies and the logistical backbones of our collective defense. They must be defended against asymmetric sabotage."— Joint Nordic Harbor Defense Task Force

Port authorities emphasize that the automated defenses operate with zero disruption to daily commercial cargo operations, allowing high-throughput container terminals and roll-on/roll-off ferries to navigate freely while maintaining security.
